I can't recall a MMO allowing old charcters into a brand new game. It wouldn't make any sense. New game, new characters, new everything and a fresh start. Until then I will keep on enjoying the professions I have now.

I think alot of the people wanting to be able to transfer characters, think that they will walk into the GW2 as strong and as well outfitted as they are now, in GW1. Trouble is, more than likely their characters will walk in "naked" as it were. They will have the lowest weapons, armor etc. Otherwise why would GW bother to make a new game if all the inherent issues from GW1 were carried over. Makes no sense. IF the people wanting to be able to transfer want to use their existing characters as place holders so their name is secured, then that is another issue to be addressed. If they wait say, one month to move over, how would the game know to hold that characters name? It would require gw doing a mass import of all active accounts. This would be a logistical nightmare.

I have voted for character transfer, because i already gave out more then 250 euro's on Guild Wars (Collectors Editions and pre release packs) and i would be very pissed and sad if i coudnt use my ole char in the new game.
I am very addicted and have spend a lot of time creating the characters as they are now, it would be a waste not to allow transfers.

I voted the last option. I'll miss 'em if they go, and it makes me less inclined to grind out those titles.. but if they gotta go, so be it.
Though I'd like to be able to reserve my main toon's name. She can at least be a descendent of my current one...

I want to keep my character name, obsidian armour, all my gold, plats, ectos, Weapon (<3 my zodiac longbow), titles and mini pets.
I don't mind losing my levels and exp.
If i wanted to have a baby irl i wouldn't have one if i expected it to be taken off me within 2 years, no point.
If i cannot bring across my characters i WILL leave, i bet all my gold, weapons, etc on that because i won't need them when i'm playing a new game with a different company.

You bring up a good point about the armor, what if the new armor system is totally different from the original GW. There are so many possibilities, as I said before let’s just wait and see how things pan out.

Rumour or not... it does raise the point of what will happen to our GW characters if/when they consider moving guild wars in a new direction.

I'm torn on this one myself.
My first response was, "Lost my characters? My babies! Oh noes!"
But the more I think about it, the more I think a fresh start would be better - and more exciting! - for me.
If we could take characters across, I'd be okay with them losing stats, items, whatever. Though it would feel like a huge waste of so much time and effort, at the same time keeping all those things would require... well... a similar game engine... and a huge change is exciting too - so if I couldn't keep those things, that's okay.
So that would leave the ability to take characters across as just for character appearance.
But, what about graphical changes? What if the same hair and faces aren't available, or look different?
Then my characters wouldn't be my characters anymore...
There are just too many unknowns to say, really, I think...
I'd miss my characters, I'd lament the time invested in them - sure. But in the end, it will have been fun for however long it lasted, and a complete fresh start would still be refreshing and exciting.
So... last vote option for me

losing all of the titles, the faction cap, the unlocks.. for a game with non-human races.. taking too much a step towards pve for me, and losing all the progress I have made.. I will not buy GW2 regardless, but being able to cross over may encourage me to buy it.

No, no and no. If you are dumb enough to waste significant amounts of time into a game or a character, you shouldn't earn any reward for it. It would just be wrong. Fresh start, or they will never learn.

When Everquest 2 came out they didn't offer people to move their characters over. It's because they are 2 different games. EQ didn't become obsolete when EQ2 came out. Many people still play both games to this day because they are 2 very different games.
I don't know why people think a GW2 would be the same as GW with just extra content. That's not why they'd make a GW2. They'd make a GW2 to be a very different game. And I bet you that people will still be playing GW and having fun after GW2 comes out.
2 very different games. Same universe. That's about it. If you'd think GW2 could import GW characters than you are mistaking the game for an expansion, which it won't be. Because there's no reason to make a new game only to expand content/story on an existing one.

I would be annoyed if in GW2 chars didn't roll over... If they didn't I'd just PvP with my mates. No PvE at all.

Lets not be selfish.
Allow the option to move characters across in some form.
Those of you begging for a fresh start and new character can create one, those of us that don't want to lose our identity in the game can move our characters across.

Well basically because of the space taken in HDD plus if more of the campaigns would be released there would be mass lag and computer slowness and people wouldn't enjoy it. That's probably one of the reasons for starting GW2 to start with. Same happened to Sims 1 and 2 although I don't think they could import characters, but still GW is a MMOG which would make a sense if they allowed that. At least partially because the maps, and NPCs and lore all fill a lot of space in your HDD.

lol @ selfish............nobody would want to play a new game if other people were running around with titles and ectos and good stuff the first day..Ever notice how it wasnt quite as fun bringing your second character out of pre? How much of a shame that would be to have that on a whole new game..

Yay to Jeremy. How is it not selfish bringing over your decked-out FoW armored dude to a brand new game with a new player base, engine, and content?
Red summed up much of what I've said already. It will be a new game. If they were able to transfer characters, then Guild Wars 2 will probably suck because it has much of the previous game with content equivilent to that of just another GW1 campaign (with better graphics. Oh boy).
Ok imagine this: Guild Wars 2 comes out. Let's assume that you can character transfer. Your favorite character is a monk with all skills, all high-end armor, and maxed out weapons. How would that be fun? All that you'll be able to do is just cap skills, get newer armor and weapons, and explore a continent. Just like a new campaign, not a new game. It would be the same-old, same-old.
ANet probably made all of these time sinks for a reason, too: They probably won't release a sequal for a looooooong time, so don't worry. By the time the sequal comes out, you will be bored as hell from Guild Wars.
Also, I've seen noone post a real reason why there should be character transfer.
